Psychology of Inner Symbols in Spiritual Philosophy (2) – The Sun Nigeria

“The God of this grand universe is so wonderful. I read many of your books and followed you on this column for two years before contacting you about my issues. I trained my wife in college with my money and she graduated and started working in a nice office. Later, when things took a turn for me and I could no longer take care of my responsibilities at home, she left me and was about to marry another man. Although I suspected that she was under the manipulation of some evil powers, I revolted and confronted her people who disapproved of her behavior and demanded that I take action to stop her. Being a wife that I love, I prayed and prayed for her to come to her senses but my prayer and that of other men of God came to nothing. My business failed beyond recognition and I experienced scarcity. A few months ago when I contacted you and informed you of my situation, you asked me to order two bottles of your oil. It became difficult but with perseverance I did what you asked of me. After praying with your oil, my wife came back to my house and apologized to me; the man who hypnotized her had an accident and God took care of him. When she came home, with her position, she helped me raise money which brought me back to my profession. Today we are happy again and business is good. May the good God bless you.

“The only way I can thank God is to tell you that I have submitted myself to God completely, worshiping Him in spirit and in truth. My story, you know, is very long. I was doing very well as a businessman but I had faith in the powers of native doctors, they also helped my business but in 2004 after my marriage, a year later, everything changed around me and I started borrowing to eat. I sold all my properties to bounce back, but the more properties I sold, the worse my case got. All wizards who have helped me in the past have been unable to help me again. Each one of them took my money and left me hopeless; my wife started misbehaving with men in my presence. In fact, I died the moment I saw unimaginable things around me initiated by my wife. Well, I kept going until I had nothing left to sell; that’s when my wife came back one day with your column and implored me to read it. When I read your article, I contacted you immediately and you gave me instructions to order bottles of your oil and pray with it. I did what you asked with the help of my wife. She prayed with me and I noticed remarkable changes in her. Eventually she started praying and completely changed for good. I continued the prayer you gave me until 22 days were over. I am happy and delighted to inform you that my life has changed and my business has been restored. Some people admitted to me, including his friend, to be responsible for my failure, but I forgave them all. We are now enjoying the blessings of God around us, thanks to your good works. God bless you, sir. (Names and contact details withheld as requested).

Different people would answer these questions differently. People in the Southeast would definitely have a different answer, while people in the South-South and South-West would definitely have a different view depending on their cultural values, orientation and tradition, regardless of their faith. Christian.

The point here is to understand the reality in these symbols. Research to find out further whether such symbols are still revered by modern Christians is much needed and will further help us to verify the psychology behind such a belief.

Not all traditional symbols are associated with demonism or Satanism. I am very sure of what I am saying here. I remember my discussion with a professor of religious symbolism who is also an ordained reverend in a well-known Pentecostal church who therefore disapproved of the illogical and derogatory expression of his general superintendent who, at a meeting of all men of God in a seminar or National Council meeting, revealed that anyone who went to study traditional religion at university as a man of God would eventually become a native doctor or be contaminated by evil spirits.

The religious leader who is also a researcher (doctoral student) in political science, in accordance with his thinking, could end up becoming a politician in the Nigerian context – you know what I mean. Following his dastardly ideology, of contaminating himself by undertaking a particular academic discipline, he might end up becoming worse than one of the Southeast APC governors due to his studies in political science at the doctoral level.

Such a despicable expression shows how psychologically bewildered, academically bewildered, and spiritually bewildered some people can be. I know well educated servants of God in the field of African Traditional Religion (ATR) who are completely free from such ignoble thought of contamination as proposed by the naive and misinformed General Superintendent. The academically sound and spiritually filled teacher deeply regretted having such a leader to oversee him.

An acclaimed preacher of the gospel, whose knowledge is devoid of the proper meanings of spiritual symbolism, needs a second touch. The Professor mourned his deficiency and prayed to the Academic God to open his eyes and guide him properly. You may want to ruminate or ponder briefly on this point; if one becomes atomically what one studies or teaches, it means that those who teach criminology are criminals. This is not very correct; I know reverend fathers and good Pentecostal preachers who have studied traditional African religion and culture just to find out. In fact, a particular deliverance minister once told me that he had studied ATR in order to know how to deal with certain ancestral demons during the deliverance section.

I decided to do a Doctorate (PhD) program in ATR with reference to Symbolism in Igbo Traditional Religion after getting my first Doctorate (PhD) in Philosophy of Religion because I needed to understand certain religious symbols and anthropological realities in my traditional religion. It did not and never will make me a native doctor (sorcerer). The misguided religious leader should know this and therefore refrain from giving bad advice to those who desire proper knowledge.

I remember when a particular course (History of Modern Cults) was assigned to me in one of the seminars where I do complementary lectures, I enjoyed it and it finally helped my search for a suitable knowledge which made snowballing into producing a book on “Comparative New Age Philosophy…” Knowledge did not make me a cultist. any manner of teaching with the ability to decipher the lie of truth, makes such a person a matured Christian, nourished and worthy of being fed with bones and not with milk. Elsewhere for now, back to the main question about symbolism.

Signs and symbols have inner spiritual and cosmic values and meanings. The symbol is the language of the soul. Signs and symbols are the language of the dreaming self. They are armed with supernatural powers to educate humanity with mysteries. The psychology of spiritual symbolism is therefore the nature of symbols and how they affect and relate to us.
