APC will consider skill, not religion or tribe – Duru

Ahead of the official announcement of the vice-president position of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the party said it would prioritize skill over religion or tribe.

The party had temporarily submitted an incumbent name as running mate to its presidential candidate Bola Tinubu.

But speaking to reporters on Sunday in Abuja, APC’s Deputy National Organizing Secretary, Hon. Nze Chidi Duru, said the party will appoint a very competent and capable person who will complement the strength and weakness of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate.

According to Duru, APC has not decided that he must come from any particular religion or tribe.

“On the joint Muslim-Muslim ticket, I think we shouldn’t bicker over who will ultimately emerge as our vice president. What is clear is that the party will appoint a very competent and capable person who will complement the strength and weakness of our candidate.

“As it is today, what we have is a joint Muslim-Muslim ticket. Religion is no longer an issue for the party. I said we are looking for a capable and competent nationalist to complete our candidate.

“We may be reaping the benefits of 1993 when people no longer talk about religion and tribe, but about those who will do good for us and lift the country and provide the required leadership that Nigeria deserves.

“All I’m saying is that he will come from the North East, North West or North Central. This is the party’s position for now. We won’t dabble in congestion to find out if he’s the legitimate candidate. He is capable on his own.

When asked if the Labor Party presidential candidate poses a threat in 2023, Duru replied, “Sowore is a threat, Atiku among other candidates is a threat to the APC. But what is important is that we are not complacent. APC understands that the ruling party is a sitting duck waiting to be eliminated.

“We also understand that what could change is for the opposition to take power and the ruling party to become the opposition party. We will work hard on the base. While other parties are struggling to resolve their crisis, APC has been able to manage the different trends and therefore it is easy for us at all levels to manage the situations.

Meanwhile, another APC leader and chief executive of Voice of Nigeria, Osita Okechukwu, however, said Bola Tinubu had a wide range of areas in the north to search for Christians.

Okechukwu said there are Christians in Sokoto, Kebbi, Borno and many other northern states to choose a running mate from.

The VON boss also said that Tinubu would win the presidential election by 60%.

“The last time I heard of our presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is that he is always searching and luckily he has a wide variety of fields to search. Benue river to the last point of Jibia, Dutse, Lake Chad boundary. So if you are the one looking in a large area where we have over 100 people with around 44 million voters which could go up to 50 million, you have a wide range of areas to search.

“Fortunately for us, many people don’t know that even in Kebbi, Sokoto, there are Christians. Even in Borno there are Christians. It has a wide range of areas to search for Christians. So Asiwaju has 60% victory in this election. We are in charge of 22 states of the federation. We have the majority in the national and state assemblies – they will not betray it.

“Even for us in the South/East which has never been our stronghold on election day, we go there to protect our mandate. Otherwise, if I don’t defend it, was I nominated before the APC won the presidential election.

“Whatever my preference, if I want my office to stay, that means I have to support Asiwaju, that applies to those who are on the board, whether you’re from Yenogoa or Dutse, that’s therefore the power of the holder.”
